Help Trees Beat the Heat

With the recent heatwave, please help our trees (including those in the boulevard) by watering around their base. Trees stressed by heat are more susceptible to pests, diseases and die off. New trees need 10 to 15 gallons of water each week and young trees that have been in the ground less than five years need a good weekly soaking.

Watering the lawn around trees helps to keep tree roots healthy, and adding a layer of mulch around the base of the tree, keeping it a couple inches away from the trunk, helps the roots retain moisture. The City also has a limited supply of watering bags available for trees four inches in diameter or less. Contact Public Works at 952-939-1382 or pwservreq@hopkinsmn.com to request a bag. Hopkins watering restrictions apply.
