Text that says Connections, a weekly update from the City of Hopkins

Noon Year's Celebration is December 28

Senior adults are invited to attend a special Noon Year’s event on Thursday, December 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Hopkins Activity Center, to celebrate another year around the sun. The Activity Center will have trivia games and appetizers to enjoy while you socialize with friends old and new. Register to attend.

FREE HOLIDAY TREE PICK-UP IS WEEK OF JANUARY 8

Holiday trees will be picked up curbside, free of charge for Hopkins residential garbage customers the week of January 8. Trees will be picked up on your garbage day, subject to change due to the weather. Lay trees in the boulevard, parallel with the street, and at least five feet from overhead wires, trees, fences, garbage carts and parked cars. Trees must be free of all ornaments, plastic bags and metal. You do not need to call to schedule this service.

Opening of Ice Rinks, Warming Houses Postponed

Due to above average temperatures this December, Hopkins ice rinks will not be opening December 23 as previously anticipated. A quick lesson on creating ice, as it is no easy task and requires just the right circumstances: Public Works crews cannot begin flooding ice rinks until the ground is completely frozen, otherwise the water will simply soak into the grass. Once the ground is frozen after a stretch of cold temperatures, it takes five days of around the clock flooding to get a good base layer of ice. The entire process takes nearly two weeks to get quality, skateable ice. Without a consistent string of temperatures below freezing by January 10, Hopkins will likely not have ice rinks available this season. Keep an eye on Connections, social media and the City website for any ice rink-related updates.
