Connections - A Weekly Update from the City of Hopkins

Mainstreet Day Postponed to September 25, 2021

The Mainstreet Day event date has been postponed to Saturday, September 25, 2021. The event which is normally held each May, has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Mainstreet Day Arts and Crafts Festival is an annual event that features more than 140 handmade crafters, food vendors, live entertainment and kids' activities. It is sponsored by JCI Hopkins (formerly the Hopkins Area Jaycees), and proceeds are reinvested into the community to support programs and projects. More information regarding Mainstreet Day is available here.

City of Hopkins Joins Just Deeds Coalition

On March 16, 2021, the City of Hopkins City Council adopted the resolution condemning the use of discriminatory covenants and approved the participation in the Just Deeds coalition. Coalition members provide free legal and title services to help property owners find discriminatory covenants and discharge them from their property titles.

Although covenants are no longer enforceable, the covenants resulted in a century of segregated communities. Renouncing the covenants allows us to acknowledge this racist history and pursue reconciliation and anti-racist solutions to mitigate the impact on our community going forward.

More information regarding Just Deeds can be found here,  or visit the official Just Deeds website here.

325 Blake Road Restoration and Redevelopment Community Listening Session and Survey

Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) and the City of Hopkins are working together on a process to find a master developer to redevelop 11-13 acres of the property at 325 Blake Road (former Cold Storage site). MCWD is also leading a restoration effort for 4-6 acres of the site to provide access to Minnehaha Creek, improve its health, and connect the Minnehaha Creek Greenway system. With its location near the creek, the Blake Road Light Rail Station, and the Cedar Lake LRT Regional Trail, the site presents a unique and exciting opportunity to create a water-focused, sustainable, transit oriented development that blends seamlessly into the Hopkins community.

We’d like to hear your thoughts and ideas as we begin the process! To find out more information about the project, sign up to receive project updates, and take a survey, view the link here. Survey respondents may also indicate their interest in participating in a virtual community listening session on March 31.
