Planning and Zoning Commission to Hold
Virtual Meeting May 26

To limit the spread of coronavirus, the Hopkins Planning and Zoning Commission will be holding their May 26 meeting virtually. City staff and commission members will join via a GoToMeeting video conference. Residents can watch the meeting live online or on Hopkins municipal cable channel 16, and participate remotely. If you would like to provide comment or ask a question during the meeting, you are encouraged to provide your question/comment prior to the meeting through this online form or via phone at 952-548-6342 by noon on May 26. Mainstreet Sealcoat Scheduled for this Summer

Mainstreet, from 5th Avenue N to Shady Oak Road, will be seal-coated this year. The work was originally scheduled for June 1 (weather dependent). However, due to the governor’s recent order for reopening, staff is trying to get the work done ahead of June. If unable to accelerate the schedule, the work will be postponed for later in the summer.

During this project, there will be no parking on Mainstreet. Signs will be posted prior to any work. Traffic disruptions will be minimal, with flaggers and signage present to direct traffic. To minimize disruptions to residents and Mainstreet businesses, this work may occur outside of normal working hours, depending on the weather. Questions can be directed to Assistant City Engineer Eric Klingbeil at 952-548-6357 or eklingbeil@hopkinsmn.com.

Opening of Burnes Park Splash Pad Delayed

Due to safety concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hopkins splash pad at Burnes Park will not open on Memorial Day weekend. Although the CDC has released considerations for the safety of those who operate, manage and use water playgrounds, the City is awaiting guidance from the Minnesota Department of Health regarding safe operations of Minnesota water parks, including splash pads. This guidance is anticipated to be included in a June 1 State of Minnesota announcement.

If it is determined that the splash pad can be safely operated and supervised within the CDC and Minnesota Department of Health guidelines, the splash pad will open later in June at a date to be determined.

Watch the City’s website for an announcement on the splash pad in early-to-mid June. Find information on COVID-related closures and cancellations here.

Application Open for Hennepin County Grants for Self-Employed Business Owners

As part of its Small Business Relief Program to support businesses impacted by COVID-19, Hennepin County is offering grants of up to $3,000 for self-employed entrepreneurs and business owners with no additional employees. Applications will be accepted until noon on May 29. Find more information here.

Voting and COVID-19

The City of Hopkins is working closely with Hennepin County to stay prepared and respond to COVID-19, and is relying heavily on the CDC Recommendations for Election Polling Locations, as well as those from the Minnesota Department of Health.

To minimize direct contact with others, the CDC encourages you to vote by mail. All Minnesota voters are eligible to vote by mail. It is easy to vote by mail, just as long as you plan ahead.

Beginning May 13, you may apply for your ballot online. Your ballot will be mailed to you about six weeks before Election Day, beginning on June 26 for the August Primary and on September 18 for the November General Election. Learn more about how you can vote by mail here.

The City is doing everything possible to ensure a safe election season for our residents. We will update our website as conditions change.

The best way to stay up to date on elections news in Hopkins is to follow us on Facebook or Twitter, and read this weekly Connections e-newsletter.
