[ARCHIVED] Curbside Organics Recycling Coming to Hopkins January 1

Beginning January 1, 2022, all Hopkins residential recycling customers will be eligible to participate in the City’s new curbside organics recycling program.

The City is rolling out the program to comply with Hennepin County’s requirement for all cities with over 10,000 residents to provide the opportunity to participate in the curbside collection of organic material by the first of the year.

About 30 percent of what we throw away is organic material, including food scraps and food-soiled paper products. This includes fruits, vegetables, meat, bones, bread, eggshells, non-recyclable food-soiled paper and more that can be utilized for composting. Recycling organic waste is more cost-effective and plays an important part in diverting waste from landfills.

Effective January 1, 2022, all properties that have recycling service via the City’s contract with Republic Services will see an additional $5.50 charge on their monthly utility bill for this new program.

As with traditional recycling, providing the opportunity to recycle organic material is required, so all properties included in the City’s recycling contract will pay for the service whether or not they choose to participate.

Residents can sign-up to participate in the program at www.hopkinsmn.com/organicsregistration
