[ARCHIVED] City of Hopkins Statement on Recent ICE Activity in the US

Exterior of Hopkins City Hall

The Hopkins City Council and City staff are aware that some members of the Hopkins community have concerns regarding deportation events happening across the United States. It is part of the City of Hopkins' mission and vision that all people feel safe and respected.

What you should know as a Hopkins resident:

  • The Hopkins Police Department does not enforce federal immigration law.
  • The Hopkins Police Department prioritizes responding to the everyday needs of those who call 911 for service, regardless of immigration status.
  • If you encounter ICE, you have the right to remain silent, ask for a lawyer, and refuse to sign any documents without consulting a lawyer.

If you need help finding the right lawyer, the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Attorney Referral Service is available at www.mnfindalawyer.com. To avoid scams, you can use the Attorney General’s publication entitled Hiring an Attorney for more information on how to find and hire a lawyer.

You can learn more about your rights by visiting the National Immigrant Justice Center website

Residents who have questions or need support with navigating resources can contact the City's Community Connectors Lucia Ludolph (Spanish speaking) and Abdullahi Kahiye (Somali speaking).
