Why wasn't my garbage picked up?

The City has a very dependable, automated refuse collection system and your garbage should be picked up each week. However, there are some reasons why your garbage may not be picked up:

  • Make sure your refuse container is out by 6:00 am.
  • Place your container four feet away from other objects including parked cars, trees, fences and garages.
  • Make sure the container is within one to four feet of the curb or alley line with the handle facing away from the street or alley.
  • Make sure only household refuse is in the container (brush, appliances and tires are not accepted).
  • Your refuse container lid must be completely closed. Please do not overfill your container.

All of my garbage will not fit into my container; may I get another container?

We suggest changing the size of your container or requesting an additional container. There are three different size containers available: 30 gallon, 60 gallon and 90 gallon. If you would like to change the size of your refuse container, contact the Finance Department at 952-548-6332 or download the Refuse Container Request Form and fax (952-935-1834 attn: Utility Billing), mail (Utility Billing, City of Hopkins, 1010 1st St S, Hopkins, MN 55343), or drop off at City Hall.

What do I do if my collection can is damaged?

Residents are responsible for cleaning and repairing containers that are damaged due to their own negligence. The City will repair damages caused by collection equipment or conditions beyond the resident's control. Call Public Works at 952-939-1382 to request repairs.

Where does my garbage go?

The City of Hopkins brings refuse to the Hennepin County Transfer Station in Brooklyn Park. After it is processed, it is incinerated at the Hennepin Energy Resource Co. (HERC) located in Minneapolis or NRG located in Elk River. Appliances are picked-up by J.R.'s Appliance Recycling, Inc. Appliances are dismantled, and any hazardous wastes are removed. Metal and some fluids are recycled.

If all of your questions are not answered here, please call the Public Works Department at 952-939-1382 or the Razzle Communication Line at 952-939-1421.
