Neighborhood Crime Alert - August 13, 2008

Hopkins, along with several other neighboring communities, is seeing an increase in occupied residential burglaries.

In the most recent rash of burglaries, thieves are becoming more bold. They are entering homes at night by cutting screens on windows that are left open and unlocked. Residents have been home when these crimes have occurred but have not been confronted by the thieves and no one has been assaulted. Items stolen have included cell phones, laptops, i-pods, wallets, prescription medications, and other easily portable high value items.

Thieves appear to spend time in one community, targeting several neighborhoods then move on to the next city. Several neighborhoods in Hopkins have been targeted in the past few weeks.

We would like to remind neighbors to:

  • Close and lock their garage doors at all times
  • Remove everything of value from their vehicles (including garage door openers)
  • Lock their doors and secure all windows (including doors from garage to home)
  • Immediately record make, model and serial numbers on all electronic items (keep this documentation in a safe place)

Hopkins police are asking neighbors to be extra observant and call 911 if they notice anything in their neighborhood that seems suspicious, even if it is in the middle of the night. We are also asking citizens to get out and talk with their neighbors and keep an eye out for each other.

Please contact the Hopkins Police Department at 952-935-8885 if you have any information on these crimes.

Feel free to contact Police Services Liaison Anne Marie Buck at 952-548-6407 or email at abuck@hopkinsmn.com to obtain additional home security information and information on joining the Neighborhood Watch Program.

Thank you for helping to keep your neighborhood
and the community of Hopkins safe!
