The Building Code in Minnesota is a state law. The law places certain responsibilities on the building owner, contractor, and/or permit holder. These responsibilities include:

  • Knowledge and understanding of codes and laws even for homeowners.
  • Obtaining permits when required.
  • Compliance with codes and ordinances.
  • Calling for inspections.
  • Correcting any violations noted and calling for re-inspections.

Homeowners who do their own work sometimes struggle with code requirements and good building practice. Every homeowner must know their own limitations and approach building projects accordingly. Remember, you are responsible for code compliance whether you know the rules or not. If you do not know the rules, educate yourself, work closely with your city building department, work with someone who is knowledgeable about codes and good building practice, or hire a qualified contractor.
