Make Plans To Celebrate National Night Out On August 7

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 7, 2007 and celebrate the 24th annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness and to provide an opportunity to promote and celebrate police-community partnerships in crime prevention efforts.
From 5:30 to 9 pm on August 7, residents in neighborhoods throughout Hopkins and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening outside with neighbors. Many neighborhoods throughout Hopkins will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, ice cream socials, potlucks, and games. Last year, 45 neighborhoods registered and took part in NNO.
Celebrate National Night Out with the Hopkins Police Department and your neighbors. Register your party and enjoy a visit from McGruff, Sparky, the Police Department, or the Fire Department.
We encourage every neighborhood to get out and participate in “America’s Night Out Against Crime.” A registration form can be obtained off the City of Hopkins website or you can contact Katherine Magdal, Hopkins Police Department, at 952-548-6407 before July 12, 2007.

Filing for these positions will open on Tuesday, August 28. The filing period will remain open until 5 pm on September 11. You may file for office at City Hall (1010 1st St S) between 8 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and until 5 pm on Tuesday, September 11.
If you have any questions about the elections or filing for office, please call Terry Obermaier at 952-548-6304.

Follow Odd/Even Watering Schedule To Meet Water Needs

Lawn watering has a large impact on the City’s ability to supply water to those who use water in Hopkins. To ensure there is enough water for all uses, including fire fighting, the City has established a voluntary lawn watering policy.

Residents and businesses are asked to water on an odd/even system. For example, if your address ends with a one or another odd number, you can water on odd-numbered days of the month: July 1, 3, 5, etc. If your address ends in a zero or another even number, you can water on even-numbered days of the month: July 2, 4, 6, etc. Lawn watering should not be done between the hours of noon and 5 pm when the evaporation rate is the highest. Activities such as play toys, car washing, and hand watering of flower beds would be exempt from this policy as long as the activity is not unattended.

Exemptions are also available for items such as new sod or landscaping. Please call the Water Department at 952-548-6373 with any questions.

Election News: Changes To Precinct 2 & 6

This past spring, the City lost two election polling places. Living Waters Church, Precinct 2, was sold and then leased by a company that holds basketball clinics. Katherine Curren Elementary School, Precinct 6, was closed and leased to a private school. Because of these two changes, the City has made changes to precinct boundary lines.

Precinct 2

Because there was not another location in the former Precinct 2 to use as a polling location, Mizpah Church volunteered to be a polling place and precinct boundary lines were changed to accommodate the use of Mizpah. Mizpah has become the new polling place for Precinct 1. Zion Lutheran Church has become the new polling place for Precinct 2.

Precinct 6

Because of the time frame that is required by state law for changing the polling locations, the City could not wait for verification from the new tenants of Katherine Curren. Precincts 6 and 7 were combined into one precinct, Precinct 6, with its polling place at the Hopkins Fire Station.

If your polling place has changed, you will be notified by postcard prior to the September Primary. If a Primary is not held, you will be notified prior to the November City Election. If you have any questions about these changes or any precinct in Hopkins, please call the City Clerk at 952-548-6304.
