Apply Now For 2007 Citizen Academy

The City of Hopkins is again offering a free opportunity to learn more about the operations, facilities and services of the City through the 2007 Citizen Academy.

Participate in a felony traffic stop. Take the position of a firefighter on an engine and learn how a firefighter prepares to fight fires. Find out how the City’s budget is created and where the money goes. Discover how economic development projects are put together.

Classes are designed to be fun and informative.

Classes will be held at 6:30 pm on five Thursdays beginning March 1, each at a different location within the City.

"The Singers" Choir To Perform At HCA

Formed in 2004 after the Dale Warland Singers ceased performing, “The Singers” carries forward the standard of creating and performing choral music at the highest level of excellence. This professional ensemble is acknowledged as Minnesota’s premiere a cappella choir.

Christmas Tree Removal

Public Works crews will be collecting residents’ Christmas trees through January 19 free of charge. Residents do not have to call in for this service. After January 19, tree removal will be done for a fee and on a call-in basis only at 952-939-1382.

  • Trees must be placed on the boulevard for collection
  • Wreaths or decorations containing metal pieces will not be accepted
  • Bags and stands must be removed
  • Unacceptable waste may be discarded in your refuse container

Trees from multi-housing, commercial or industrial properties will not be collected by the City. Arrangements for disposal should be made through their private refuse contract
handlers.

Recycle Old Phone Books

Residents participating in the City’s curbside recycling program may recycle old phone books by placing them in their green and yellow recycling cart.

Residents without curbside recycling may drop off phone books at the Hopkins/Minnetonka Recycling Center, 11522 Minnetonka Blvd, Minnetonka. The recycling center is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

Exercise Your Brain At The Hopkins Activity Center

Brain Aerobics
Kick-off on Tuesday, January 9, 12:30 pm
Aerobics keeps your muscles in shape, Brain Aerobics keeps your mind in shape. This program will include mind activities to keep you mentally active, physical activity to keep a healthy blood flow to the brain and proper nutrition to fuel our brains. During the kick-off program, Ellie Peterson, Power of Positive Aerobics, will speak on focusing your mind on positive self-talk, strengthening your body and energizing your spirit. Watercolor Workshop
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday January 23, 24 & 25, 1—4 pm

A concentrated workshop for watercolor painters with any level of experience. Work on subjects of your own interest under the watchful eye of instructor Daryl Laub. Rent The Activity Center
The Hopkins Activity Center has a gym, meeting rooms, and kitchen available for use by residents. Call us when planning your next meeting, party, neighborhood get-together, or sports activity practice. Applications for usage and facility use guidelines are available by calling 952-939-1333 or emailing activitycenter@hopkinsmn.com. The Hopkins Activity Center is located at 33 14th Avenue North.

Register Early For Soccer

The Hopkins Pavilion is again hosting the Hopkins Dynamo Soccer Club’s Instructional Soccer Program for youth ages 5-14. Seven one-hour sessions will be held on Saturday mornings in March and April.

The clinic includes a T-shirt and instruction in proper passing and shooting, trapping (receiving), and dribbling. The instruction will also include small-sided games.

Registration will close when filled with the first 40 participants at each time/age slot. The fee is $50 per participant, $45 if postmarked by February 1, 2007. Ice Rinks & Indoor Warming Houses

Depending on the weather, the City’s ice rinks will be open the following days and times. Additionally, all the sites will be open from 12–9 pm during winter break (Dec 26–29, Jan 1), on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan 15), and President’s Day (Feb 19). All sites are closed on Dec 25. Plan Ahead For Home Remodeling Fair

The Home Remodeling Fair is a free event sponsored by the cities of Golden Valley, Hopkins, Minnetonka and St. Louis Park, as well as the Hopkins, Minnetonka and St. Louis Park Community Education. The goal of the Home Remodeling Fair is to provide residents with ideas, information and resources to promote improvements to the housing stock in each community.

This year’s fair features a tremendous line-up of seminars and mini-demonstrations for the do-it-yourselfer. There will be an Idea Center packed full of a variety of professionals to provide free, no obligation advice. The “Ask the Pro” area will have architects, landscape architects and interior designers. A representative from the Center for Energy and Environment will be on hand to answer your questions about lowering energy costs, as well as a representative from Community Action Partnership for Suburban Hennepin County to provide information about foreclosure prevention, reverse mortgage counseling, energy assistance programs, homeownership services and financial counseling.
