Free Leaf & Yard Waste Pick Up
The City will be picking up leaf and yard waste free of charge for a limited time this fall. Locate your neighborhood below to plan for your free pick up.
Bellgrove, Hobby Acres, Park Ridge, and Interlachen Park Residents
The City provides free street leaf and yard waste pick-up in the your area using front-end loaders and dump trucks. Pick up in these areas will be October 30–November 2.
Bellgrove: Monday, October 30
Interlachen Park: Tuesday, October 31 (Meadowbrook Rd up to and including Interlachen Rd)
Park Ridge: Wednesday, November 1
Hobby Acres: Wednesday, November 1
Interlachen Park: Thursday, November 2 (Interlachen Rd to Blake Rd)
Place leaves in loose piles (unbagged) in the street along the curb line. Leaves should be placed on the street no later than 7:00 am on your scheduled pick up day and no earlier than the day before your scheduled pick up day. There will not be free yard waste bag pick up in these neighborhoods. Collection of bags with stickers will resume November 6 through November 30 (weather permitting).
5th Ave N, County Roads 73 and 5, and Blake Rd Residents
Due to County restrictions and high traffic levels, residents will have free leaf and yard waste bag pick up October 16–November 16. Collection of bags with stickers will resume November 20–November 30, weather permitting.
All Other City Service Area Residents
Free fall leaf/yard waste pick-up of bagged material will be October 16–November 16. Collection of bags with stickers will resume November 20 through November 30, weather permitting.
NOTE: For all community areas, before or after the scheduled free pick up dates, yard waste stickers must be affixed to bags. Bags of leaf and yard waste in all City service areas are collected on the same day as regular refuse. Pick up of bags with yard waste stickers will continue through November 30, weather permitting.
Yard Waste Stickers
Yard waste stickers are $2.00 each and must be affixed to each bag as payment for pick up. Stickers must be visible from the street or alley. Stickers may be purchased at City Hall or Public Works. A minimum of ten stickers must be ordered to purchase stickers by phone (952-939-1382). Stickers will be sent via mail and the fee will be added to your utility bill.
Yard Waste/Brush Drop Off
The yard waste and brush drop off site will remain open Wednesdays from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Saturdays 9:00 am to 3:00 pm through October 28.
From November 4 through December 2, the site will only be open on Saturdays 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, weather permitting.
Fire Department Offers Open House
In conjunction with Fire Prevention Week (October 8-14), the Hopkins Fire Department will be holding an open house on Saturday, October 14, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Hopkins Fire Station (101 17th Ave S). Stop by for a ride in the fire truck, free t-shirts and fire helmets for the kids, and food and drink.
The Minnesota Visiting Nurse Agency will be administering flu shots at the Hopkins Activity Center on Monday, October 30, from 1–4 pm. Flu shots are $25 (free to seniors with Medicare Part B).
Every year in the United States, an estimated 36,000 people die from influenza, more commonly called the flu, and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized. Getting your flu shot is the best prevention.
The Minnesota Department of Health recommends you get the flu shot if you are:.
- 65 years or older
- Between 6 months and 64 years old and You have heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, asthma, cancer, lung disease, HIV/AIDS, or any other disease that affects the immune system, or You are receiving long-term drug treatment, such as steroids, or cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation
- A healthy child 6 to 23 months old
- A household contact of an infant less than 6 months old
- A resident of a long-term care facility
- A health care worker
- A child or adolescent on aspirin therapy
- A pregnant woman (in any trimester)
- Between 6 months and 64 years old, healthy, and you don’t want to catch influenza.

November 7 is election day. Read below for information on how to get registered.
Registration
City Hall will be open until 5:00 pm on October 17 for voter registration. The only other opportunity to register after October 18 will be on Election Day. There have been several changes to the laws on Election Day registration, including the type of identification you must have. Please call City Hall at 952-935-8474 or go to www.hopkinsmn.com/cityhall/elections/ for complete information about voting and Election Day registration.
Absentee Ballots
Absentee ballots will be available on October 6. You may request an application for an absentee ballot through November 6. City Hall will be open from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on November 4 and until 5:00 pm on November 6 for absentee balloting. Please call the City Clerk at 952-548-6304 for more information..
Fall Film Festival Kicks Off At HCA
Fall is the season for vintage films at the Hopkins Center for the Arts! Catch great film classics and live musical entertainment every Monday in October, starting October 9. Combining the talents of artists past and present, these events are not found anywhere else. Purchase your tickets online at www.hopkinsartscenter.com or at the door: $10 adult; $8 HCA, Inc., Jazz88-KBEM, or MPR members, The Rake subscribers, seniors (age 60 and over), and students age 18 and older; $5 children (age 10-18).
Jazz Masters II

The best of past and present—a one-of-a-kind show featuring clips of great jazz musicians of the past such as Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington as well as live music by Jazz Deluxe.
Dancing the Night Away
Monday, October 16, 7:30 pm
Fantastic tap dancers caught on film, including the Nicholas Brothers and Ray Bolger. In addition, dancer Scott Crosbie, with Bill Mohr on the banjo, will perform live.
Sci-Fi-Orama
Monday, October 23, 7:30 pm
Buster Crabbe is Flash Gordon in the feature “Rocket Ship” (1936). Sci-fi trailers add to the fun and live music is provided by the Galacticrons, a trio of rockin’ alien musicologists.
Fright Night!
Monday, October 30, 7:30 pm
Get a jump on Halloween with the silent classic Dracula story, “Nosferatu” (1922). The premiere of a new score performed live to the film by MovieVaudeville makes this a special event. Come in costume and receive half-priced tickets!

Doors Open Soon for Jaycees' Haunted House
The Dungeons of Darkness and Doom will be open October 13, 14, 18-22, and 27-31. Hours of operation are 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The Dungeons is a theatrical haunted house that takes visitors on a journey through over a dozen rooms of mayhem and madness.
Admission is $10.00, or $8.00 with the donation of a non-perishable or canned food item. The Dungeons is located at 1414 to 1420 Main Street in Hopkins (at 15th and Main by Dominos).
