Three Hopkins Police Officers Receive Statewide Recognition

On October 4, 2006 the Minnesota Sex Crimes Association recognized Sgt. Ray Laudenbach as the Investigator of the Year for 2006. Laudenbach was recognized for his efforts that lead to identification of a suspect wanted for two home invasion/sexual assault cases that occurred in 2001. Laudenbach not only identified the suspect in those cases but also helped identify him in other unsolved cases in two other states. That suspect is awaiting trial in Hennepin County as well as Wisconsin and Illinois. Laudenbach is the first Hopkins police officer to be named Investigator of the Year.

On October 12, 2006 Chief Mark Dunaski of the Minnesota State Patrol presented Sgt. Gordy Klingbeil and Officer Mark Kyllo the Minnesota State Patrol Commendation Award. The officers received this recognition for their efforts last year when a suicidal man attempted to jump off an overpass on Highway 169. Klingbeil and Kyllo responded to the scene to assist a state trooper. The suicidal man attempted to jump from the bridge and was grabbed by the trooper and Hopkins officers and pulled to safety. The action saved the man’s life and was undertaken at personal risk to the officers.

The Minnesota State Patrol Commendation Award is the highest award presented by the Minnesota State Patrol to police officers from other departments.

City Council To Consider Change In Nuisance Abatement Ordinance

The Hopkins City Council is considering amending the current nuisance abatement ordinance in order to simplify the procedure used to abate nuisances. This process would be used in cases where the property owner has refused to clean up the nuisance and failed to respond to Administrative Citations. The ability of the City to hire a contractor to clean up the property would be made easier. Appeals regarding the process would be heard by a hearing officer.
The proposed ordinance would also raise the fees charged to property owners who violate the fire code or the housing code. The minimum fine for the first offense is set at $200. For more information, check the City’s web site or call the Building Official at 952-548-6321.

Neighbors Can Help Prevent Crime

Neighborhood Watch is a cooperative effort between the Hopkins Police Department and individual neighborhoods. Simply put, it is you and your neighbors watching out for one another. Neighbors get to know one another so they can tell a neighbor from a stranger and then become the eyes and ears of the community by reporting suspicious activity that is not part of a neighborhood’s routine.

Neighborhood Watch helps neighbors learn how to recognize suspicious activity by providing the Police Department the opportunity to inform residents about crime in Hopkins and local crime trends. The more neighbors know about local criminal activity, the better they can recognize and report it by calling 911.

If you are interested in learning more about Neighborhood Watch or starting one in your neighborhood, please contact the Hopkins Police Department Police Services Liaison, Katherine Magdal, at 952-548-6407.

Avoid Getting Towed During Snow Emergencies

The City of Hopkins can declare a snow emergency upon a two-inch snowfall. Parking restrictions remain in effect until streets are plowed curb-to-curb and parking lots and ramps are completely plowed. Snow depths are measured in Hopkins and may not coincide with the snow depths reported at the Twin Cities Airport. Snow emergencies are announced on the Hopkins Police Department’s recorded snow line at 952-939-1399.

Vehicles left on the streets or in public parking lots during snow emergencies may be ticketed or towed. To avoid being towed, residents should remove vehicles from the city streets and parking lots as soon as a snow emergency has been declared. If you have nowhere else to park, there are several emergency parking locations. (View a map of the locations.)

  • Municipal Lot 300 just south of Downtown Park on 9th Ave S
  • Maetzold Field parking lot–access from 1st St N
  • East of 9th Ave S and north of Westbrooke Way between 9th Ave S and Nine Mile Creek
  • Far east end of 8th St S near Valley Park

For instructions on how to claim towed vehicles call Matt’s Towing at 952-949-2385. Vehicles are released only to the registered owners. Owners need to bring proof of ownership, proof of insurance, and a valid driver’s license in order to claim their vehicles. Payments are accepted by cash, Visa, or Mastercard. No checks.
