National Night Out: Hopkins To Join Cities Nationwide For “America’s Night Out Against Crime”
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 1, 2006 and celebrate the 23rd Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out (NNO), which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Hopkins Police Department, will involve over 10,000 communities from all 50 states, US territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.
NNO is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness and to provide an opportunity to promote and celebrate police-community partnerships in crime prevention efforts.
On August 1 from 5:30 to 9:00 pm, residents in neighborhoods throughout Hopkins and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening outside with neighbors. Many neighborhoods throughout Hopkins will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, ice cream socials, potlucks, and games. Last year, 40 neighborhoods registered and took part in NNO.
Celebrate National Night Out with the Hopkins Police Department and your neighbors.
Register your party and enjoy a visit from McGruff, Sparky, the Police Department, or the Fire Department.
Get The Word Out—Join Your Neighbors And “Give Crime And Drugs A Going Away Party!”
We encourage every neighborhood to get out and participate in America’s Night Out Against Crime. A registration form can be obtained from the City of Hopkins Web site or you can contact Katherine Magdal, Hopkins Police Department, at 952-548-6407 before July 13, 2006.
Sanitary Sewer Cleaning Program
The Hopkins Utility Division has a sanitary sewer-cleaning program that includes cleaning the sanitary sewers on a three-year revolving schedule. The area being cleaned this year is all streets and avenues east of 5th Ave N to the Hopkins/St. Louis Park border and north of County Road 3 to Hwy 7; and the Hopkins’ areas north of Hwy 7.
A sanitary sewer jet-cleaning machine uses high-pressure water to clean the sanitary sewer. This high water pressure may affect your home’s sanitary sewer plumbing. You may experience gurgling or bubbling water in the toilet bowl or you may smell sewer gas from your basement floor drains. If this does occur, flush your toilet and pour water into your floor drains. This does not damage your sewer system. The water that comes out is the water that is normally in the home’s system (drain traps), not the water from the sanitary sewer in the street.
If you experience any problems with your sanitary sewer, please call the City first before you hire a private sewer repair company. The City will come out and check the sanitary sewer in the street and determine the location of the obstruction in the sanitary sewer. If the problem is in our system, we will correct it as soon as we can and restore the proper operation of the sanitary sewer. Please contact the Hopkins Utility Division at 952-939-1382 during normal working hours Monday–Friday, 7:30 am–3:00 pm. For emergency situations after normal working hours or on weekends and holidays call the Police Department at 952-938-8885.
Recreation Services Steps Up to Health
The statistics are unavoidable—Americans are facing a huge health crisis as the number of obese adults and children continues to rise.
According to recent surveys, 64% of adults are overweight or obese—a 60% increase over the last ten years. In addition, 15% of youth ages six to 19 are overweight, a rate that has tripled in the last 40 years. Each year, 400,000 deaths—17% of all deaths nationwide—are attributed
to obesity.
Cited as significant reasons for the nation’s health crisis are changes in the way we live, work, and play; unhealthy diets; and lack of physical activity.
Now, Hopkins-Minnetonka Recreation Services will be taking the lead in combating obesity rates by participating in Step Up to Health, a new initiative designed to fight the nation’s health crisis by increasing the awareness of the benefits of physical activity.
The role of parks and recreation departments in the Step Up to Health initiative is to provide access to parks and recreation facilities; provide opportunities to participate in active recreation;
provide leadership in starting community-wide initiatives; and inform and educate the public about healthy lifestyle choices.
Throughout the next year, watch for more information from Recreation Services about the Step Up To Health initiative, as well as more information about how Recreation Services can support
you in choosing a healthy lifestyle. For more information, call 952-939-8203.
Lawn watering has a large impact on the City’s ability to supply water to those who use water in the City. To ensure there is enough water for all uses, including firefighting, the City has established a voluntary lawn watering policy.
Residents and businesses are asked to water on an odd/even system. For example, if your address ends with a 1 it is an odd number and you can water on odd numbered days of the month (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.). If your address ends in a 0 or 2, it is an even number and you can water on even numbered days of the month (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.). Lawns should not be watered when the evaporation rate is the highest—12:00–5:00 pm. Activities such as play toys, car washing, and hand watering of flowerbeds would be exempt from this policy as long as the activity is not unattended.
Exemptions are also available for items such as new sod or landscaping. Please call the Water Department at 952-548-6373 with any questions.
