Hopkins PD: 100 Years of Service, Building on the Next Century

The final phase of the 3-phase police station building project was completed in March of this year. The police station is a very specialized building. In addition to regular office and files for staff use, the facility contains special rooms for interviews of victims and suspects, laboratory space for processing and storage of evidence, and secure jail facilities.

The police station remodeling is the final piece of a 5-year plan to upgrade Public Works, Fire Department and Police Department buildings in the city.

The police not only moved into their new facility in 2005, but 2005 is also the 100th anniversary of the Hopkins Police Department.

Originally founded as the West Minneapolis Police Department in 1905, the name was changed to the Hopkins Police Department when the city's name changed in 1928. The department has adopted the slogan of "100 Years Of Service, Building On The Next Century" to celebrate both the 100th anniversary of the department and the completion of the police station remodel.

An Open House of the new police station is planned for Saturday, May 21, 2005 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, the weekend of Mainstreet Days in Hopkins. Please plan to stop by and tour the new police station on your way to or from Mainstreet Days. Limited edition 100th anniversary T-shirts and lapel pins will be on sale at the Open House. The police station is located at 11th Ave S and 1st St S, just two blocks south of Mainstreet.

Sewer Backups

Most sanitary sewer problems are due to blockages in the homeowner's private service pipe that extends from the home to the city sewer collection pipe in the street. The City cleans up to one-third of the sanitary sewer collection pipes each year plus trouble areas annually. This regular maintenance substantially reduces the risk of a blockage and backup; however, there is no way to eliminate the possibility of a blockage in either the city system or the homeowner's service pipe. Additionally, it's not uncommon for the city sewer to become clogged after a homeowner has had their private pipe cleaned. Dislodged tree roots can become hung up in the city sewer causing an eventual blockage. If you're having your private sewer line cleaned or you suspect you have a problem with a drain in your home, please call Public Works immediately at 952-939-1382 and they will check the city sewer for blockage and clear it, if necessary.

Sewer backup insurance is often an optional endorsement on homeowner's policies. This optional coverage can be often be added at a very reasonable cost. Check with your insurance agent to find out if this coverage is available.
