City Budget Process

The following is the typical calendar for determining the budget for the following year.

May

  • City Manager meets with City Council to set parameters and goals for next year's budget

June

  • Budget worksheets are distributed to departments, completed and returned to finance department

July

  • Finance reviews and compiles budget summary
  • City Manager & Finance meet with departments to review budgets

August

  • City Council work sessions to review budgets

September

  • City Council adopts preliminary levy and budget
  • Proposed budget and levy certified to Hennepin County

September—November

  • Special revenue and enterprise budgets presented to City Council for review and approval

December

  • Truth in Taxation public hearing
  • Final budget approval and tax levy certification
  • Final levy certification to Hennepin County
